Sanskrit Shloka

Meaning

Opening Chant:     

ॐ सहनाववतु सहनौभुनक्तु सहवीर्यम् करवावहै
तेजस्विना वधीतमस्तु मा विद्विशावहै
ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः ॥
om saha nävavatu saha nau bhunaktu|

saha véryam karavävahai|

tejasvi nävadhétamastu mävidviçävahai||

om çäntiù çäntiù çäntiù||

May he protect us, grant us Wisdom’s fruit

May we gain energy to know the truth

May our intellects grow clear and bright

May we cherish ill-feelings toward none

Closing Chant 1:  

ॐ पूर्णमदः पूर्णमिदम् पूर्णात् पूर्णमुदच्यते ।
पूर्णस्य पूर्णमादाय पूर्णमेवावशिश्यते ।
ॐ शन्तिः शन्तिः शन्तिः ॥
om pürëamadaù pürëamidaà pürëät pürëamudacyate|

pürëasya pürëamädäya pürëamevävaçiñyate|

om çäntiù çäntiù çäntiù||

That is complete, this too is complete

This completeness came from that completeness

Though this completeness came from that completeness

That completeness remains forever complete

Closing Chant 2:    

ॐ असतो मा सद्गमय ।
तमसो मा ज्योतिर्गमय ।
मृत्योर्मा ऽमृतम् गमय ।
ॐ शन्तिः शन्तिः शन्तिः ॥
om asato mä sadgamaya

tamaso mä jyotirgamaya

måtyormä amåtaà gamaya|

om çäntiù çäntiù çäntiù||

Lead me from unreal (untruth) to real (truth)

Lead me from darkness to light

Lead me from the fear of death to the knowledge of immortality.
